Home Remedies for the Flu

Influenza - or the flu - can be a serious viral illness and you may consider visiting a doctor.  The following are some common home remedies for the flu:

  1. Get plenty of rest
  2. Take aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen only if you must - a fever may actually help your body fight the "flu bug" and persons under 21 years old taking aspirin while suffering from the flu may be susceptible to Reye syndrome
  3. Drink plenty of fluids
  4. If it is wintertime, humidify your home
  5. Suppress dry, hacking coughs with over-the-counter relief (although coughs that bring up mucus are considered "productive")
