  • Studies connect hearing loss with brain atrophy.
  • Early warning signs include difficulty in noisy settings.
  • “January is an excellent time to schedule a hearing evaluation.”

December marks a time when many people make resolutions to improve their lives. While better eating habits and regular exercise often top the list, the International Hearing Society (IHS) wants everyone to think about hearing health, too.

IHS President Patrick Kochanowski, BS, ACA, BC-HIS, says, “The latest research reveals that hearing health plays a major role in overall health. January is an excellent time to schedule a hearing evaluation by a licensed hearing healthcare provider.”

Why Hearing Health Matters.

Research from Johns Hopkins suggests that hearing loss may be tied to quicker brain atrophy, social isolation, and an increased risk of falls. Mayo Clinic notes that possible warning signs of hearing loss include muffled sounds, trouble understanding words in noisy places, and feeling annoyed by background noise. Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) can also be a sign.

If you noticed any of these issues in 2024, consider making an appointment with a licensed hearing healthcare provider in 2025.
