Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life threatening condition involving severe dehydration and possibly coma.  "Ketosis," an abnormal condition when the body burns fat instead of glucose, generally occurs in people having insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, a disorder in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.  Insulin is a hormone that regulates glucose (sugar) levels.  When ketosis is allowed to progress in a diabetic person, diabetic ketoacidosis may occur.
